Sofia Alaoui won the award for best short film at France's 46th Cesar ceremony, held at the Olympia by the Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques.
Produced by Jiango Films company, with the support of the CCM, "So What if the Goats Die" tells in the Amazigh language the story of Abdellah, a young shepherd and his father, who witness the death of their animals in the high Atlas Mountains.
Abdellah must therefore go to a nearby village for supplies, before realizing that it has been deserted due to a mysterious event.
After its release in 2019, this short film participated in the international competition of the Sundance Festival (US, January-February 2020), winning the Grand Jury Prize of this "prestigious festival considered to be one of the major events of independent cinema in the world".
The film also took part in the official competition of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (February 2020), the biggest short film meeting in the world, before participating in the National Film Festival of Tangier (February-March 2020), then at the Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival (August 2020) and at the Namur International Francophone Film Festival (October 2020).
After the Cesar Awards, "So What if the Goats Die" will continue its beautiful course in April 2021 as it was nominated for the Academy Awards (the Oscars).
The 46th Cesar ceremony took place this year in the context of an unprecedented health crisis whose impact has affected the film industry in France and worldwide.
"Two Of Us" by director Filippo Meneghetti won the Cesar Award for best first film.
