This meeting, which was also attended by the ambassadors of Costa Rica and Portugal to the UN, is organized in support of the Master Plan on "Youth Call to Action for the implementation of SDG 13 (climate action)", one year after the Youth Climate Summit held in 2019, as a prelude to the United Nations Climate Action Summit.
The event takes place ahead of the first United Nations Biodiversity Summit, scheduled for Wednesday in New York with the virtual participation of several world leaders.
Speaking on this occasion, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale, stressed that the Kingdom has always believed in the ability of young people to operate a positive transformation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
"As a globally committed country, Morocco has, for several decades, systematically placed young people and citizens at the center of its efforts to accelerate the implementation of sustainable development, notably their ability to design innovative ways to protect biodiversity, preserve the environment and raise awareness about sustainable production and consumption modes," said Hilale.
In this action-oriented endeavor, Morocco is not only targeting young people, but also intends to engage more and more with them as an engine of constructive collaboration, explained the ambassador.
He recalled, in this regard, that during the 2019 Climate Action Summit, leaders from all over the world made a strong political commitment to promote the empowerment of young people, in particular in the climate field.
In this context, a new major initiative to fight climate change has been launched by HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environment Protection, aimed at promoting ideas and the solutions of young Africans for the Climate, noted the Ambassador.
This initiative entitled "African Youth Climate Hub" aims to give young Africans the opportunity to establish and foster a generational movement to fight climate change, said Hilale.
For his part, Peter Kwasi Kodjie, vice-president of the Master Plan on "Youth Call to Action for the implementation of SDG 13" and Secretary General of "All-Africa Student Union", highlighted the solidarity of Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, with African countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic, recalling that the Kingdom had sent several batches of personal protective equipment to more than 25 African countries to help them counter the epidemic.
